Young stars of boxing converge on Adelaide

More than 200 of the nation’s finest young athletes will compete at the under-19 Australian Boxing Championships in Adelaide over six days.

From Monday April 3 through to Saturday April 8, male and female boxers will not only fight for state glory, but also for national selection on the road to the 2017 Youth Commonwealth Games.

The event is also an elite men’s selection event for the national team to attend the Oceania Championships and World Championships.

“Australia’s best boxers will be in town and there’s a lot at stake, so it is one of the most important weeks in boxing this year,” Boxing South Australia President Allison Goodes said.

In a first for South Australia, the elite men will not wear protective headgear at the event, after Boxing SA received a one-off exemption from state rules.

“Research from the International Boxing Association has shown than removing head gear in fact reduces concussions and facial cuts,” Ms Goodes said.

Ms Goodes is hoping for strong attendances throughout the week.

“We want to see a full house, especially for the elite mens finals on Friday night,” she said.

“Putting on a national sporting event like this comes at a significant cost, especially for a small state association, so we’re calling on the public to get behind us and support local sport.”
